Become a part of Saints Rugby – celebrating our long and distinguished history, looking to the future…..

The most successful University Rugby Programmes have a strong community of supporters behind them. This community involvement may be in the form of donations or general support and can come from graduates of the University or those with a vested interest in building the programme.

Only by having consistent and successful input from our supporters can we look to keep pushing the boundaries of our rugby achievements.

1858 CLUB

1858 Club

To celebrate our long and distinguished history, the University of St Andrews RFC is proud to announce the creation of a supporters club, the 1858 Club.

Rugby at the University of St Andrews has developed into the leading programme in Scotland, and we are aiming to become the best in the UK. To achieve this, we need to be able to offer the very best facilities, training and experience.

We want to provide the very best experience, a sustainable club and a way for you to continue participating in rugby at St Andrews. You will be investing in the future of rugby at St Andrews, ensuring that future generations of players make fond memories like your own.

The 1858 Club is open to all University of St Andrews alumni, friends and family with a minimum donation of £50 per year.

David Ross, Director of Rugby

“The 1858 club is an important development for the rugby club program and although the focus of the 1858 club is on off the field events and opportunities, there is no doubt that the 1858 club will benefit the current group of players on the field as well. In this tough economic climate where sponsorship and budgets are limited, any potential money back into the club will allow us to provide better coaching, more equipment and create more rugby specific opportunities to allow the rugby program to continue to be the best in Scotland and one of the best in the UK. The club’s history and tradition is something that we are extremely proud of and the 1858 club will allow us to continue to celebrate this history but drive forward the future of the club”

Stephen Stewart, Director of Sport & Exercise

“Sport is flourishing at St Andrews. We enjoy one of the highest participation rates of any university in Scotland and our students regularly perform at national and international level. The University has invested in making sports central to the student experience, providing the infrastructure and opportunities for all and tailored sport for those who seek to excel. However, with growing student numbers and increased demand, our ability to fulfil our ambitions is being hampered by our limited facilities. To address this problem, we are planning a major refurbishment and extension of our Sports Centre. Continued investment is crucial for the development of sport at St Andrews and the 1858 Club provides a fantastic avenue from which former students, friends and family members can contribute and be a part of the future of rugby at one of Scotland’s oldest clubs.”

With many of our alumni, friends and family based close to St Andrews we are hoping the 1858 Club will revive the match day crowds. Put on your old St Andrews jersey or 1858 Club tie and bring your mates to cheer on the Saints at the home of running rugby. Then stay and enjoy our after match hospitality and get to know the stars of today. If you would like to sponsor a match ball, please get in touch with the Director of Rugby, David Ross.

As an 1858 Club member you will receive your own Club Tie, the same one worn by the current St Andrews squad. You will have the opportunity to pre-order match tickets for all Scotland’s home internationals including the 6 Nations and Autumn Tests. A quarterly club newsletter will also keep you up-to-date with news from the squad and will also enable you to announce your own news to our alumni network.

Rugby has been played in St Andrews for over 150 years, since the rugby club's foundation in 1858. A founder member of the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU), the club was the nursery of Scottish rugby football in the 1860s and the birthplace of 'passing' the great feature of the back game.

In 1871 three St Andrews students represented Scotland in the first ever international rugby fixture against England. In total, the club has produced 22 international rugby players who between them have gained 150 caps, including 4 British and Irish Lions and 8 Barbarians.

Captaining The Saints is a huge honour for any student coming to study and play rugby in St Andrews. In 1986, the role of captain was split in two for the first time, with off field duties assigned to the Club Captain leaving the 1st XV Captain to concentrate on the club's on field performances.

In 2008, the club celebrated 150 years of rugby in St Andrews with a special week of events which saw the South Africa Rugby Legends take on the Scottish Legends on University Park, a coaching clinic for local kids and culminated in the Sesquicentennial Alumni Dinner.

Since its inception in 1970, the St Andrews Seven-a-side Tournament has grown to become the largest student run 7s in the UK, with teams from around the country returning to University Park at the end of April each year to fight for the historic Drummond Trophy or Stanley Plate.

The club turns out three Men's teams and one Women's team on a Wednesday in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships. Men's and Women's 1st XV squads play in the Premier 1A leagues, and participate in the BUCS Cup competition, with the Men's 2nd and 3rd XV squads in the lower tiers

Along with the Rugby Club's charity work, the Community Outreach Program, in partnership with SportScotland, Active Schools, Fife Rugby and Saints Sport sees members from Saints Rugby coach after school rugby in the local primary schools for 6 weeks.
